Review: A gem, off the beaten track!

It doesn't look like much from outside and the same could be said about the inside. Atlantic could easily be overlooked and if noticed at all, perceived as another 'hole in the wall', but this Brockton Village restaurant is indeed a jewel and proves that you can't knock...

It doesn't look like much from outside and the same could be said about the inside. Atlantic could easily be overlooked and if noticed at all, perceived as another 'hole in the wall', but this Brockton Village restaurant is indeed a jewel and proves that you can't knock it until you try it.

A definitive seafood theme dominates the room as tacky photos of fish and boats hang on the walls. A friendly, laid back server leads us to our table, while bluegrass and blues play faintly in the background, setting a pleasant, cozy and equally laid back mood.

Chef-owner Nathan Isberg's menu not only changes daily but strongly encourages sharing. It's a mix of tapas and entrees so naturally, we take full advantage and sample a variety of eccentric dishes that are best enjoyed with anticipation rather than expectation.

One is the chili spiced Calamari Antipasti ($2.50). Isberg uses a variety of spices that magically work well together as one never overpowers the other. In fact, it was so lovely we ordered two. The Jerk Chicken Noodle Soup ($6) has a kick that hits me right away, while the Red Cabbage and Grain Salad ($6) with dates, blue goat cheese and hazelnuts sounds like an odd bunch to put together in one bowl but in reality turns out to be a beautifully fresh, summery combination.

Ontario Whitefish and Peppercorn Sauce ($10) with roasted new potatoes was so delightful and tender it was eaten slowly to savour the variety of tastes. The Seared Qualicum Scallops ($12) with tomato and saffron ragout were mouth-watering with the combination of citrusy sweetness. Meanwhile, the Grilled Sockeye Salmon ($13) with béarnaise and rainbow chard is a must, if you find it on the menu of course.

For dessert, the Buttermilk Panna Cotta with Peach Soup ($5) kept my guest reaching for the spoon time and again and the Wild Apple Spelt Crepes ($5) kept me reaching for my spoon repeatedly. A perfect ending to a fantastic meal; a return visit is imminent.

Price: Reasonable. $100 with wine, variety of dishes, dessert, tax and tip
Atmosphere: Laid back, casual
Wheelchair Access: Yes
Hint: Sharing is encouraged; tapas and entrees make for a well balanced meal.
Surprise, Surprise: Menu changes daily, ensuring freshness
