Q. What is Alexa?

A. Alexa Internet, Inc. is a California-based subsidiary company of Amazon.com that is best known for operating a website that provides information on the web traffic to other websites. Alexa collects information from users who have installed an "Alexa Toolbar," allowing them to provide statistics on web site traffic, as well as lists of related links.

Q. What is Dine.TO's ranking on Alexa and how does it fair compared to other similar sites?

A. The Dine.TO website has an impressive top traffic ranking of appr. #100,000 (where #1 is the highest ranked website worldwide).
According to Alexa, Dine.TO is the most visited Restaurant and Hospitality website in Toronto and one of the TOP 20 most popular in the Toronto Category. (http://www.alexa.com/browse/category/toronto)

Q. Should Alexa rankings be taken seriously?

A. NO! Alexa simply provides a rough snapshot of a website's popularity. In the late-1990s it was one about the only public resource for comparing website traffic, hence its early popularity. Alexa ranking is heavily skewed towards websites which have a large webmaster/tech audience. This is because webmasters or web savvy audiences are much more likely to have the Alexa toolbar installed than websites whose visitors are unaware of Alexa. Alexa has recently updated their 10-year-old software. However, some analysts wonder if this will be enough to keep up with newer competitors like Google Trends, Compete and Quantcast.

Q. Why do internet sales peoples heavily promote Alexa?

A. Ignorance. Since the majority of Alexa Toolbar users are webmasters/ tech audience, their website tends to have a higher Alexa ranking, this is especially true for webdesign and hosting companies who have for example a high volume of web designers browsing their portfolio section.

Because the majority of surfers have little or no knowledge of Alexa.com, sales people have an easier chance of selling their service or product based on their sites Alexa ranking, rather than their sites actual analytics.

Q. Is there ways of increasing my Alexa Ranking?

A. Many webmasters claim that they can significantly improve the Alexa ranking of less popular sites by making them the default page, by exchanging web traffic with other webmasters, by requiring their users to install the Alexa toolbar and much more. Many companies have also made a business based on these tactics.

Below is a list of websites and blogs that feature tricks and tips to increase your Alexa Ranking.
