Mario Cassina grew up in Brazil with seven brothers and sisters. His life was filled with the love of his family and the dedication of two loving parents. Saying goodbye to them to leave for North America was one of the hardest things he ever had to do.
Life in Canada was difficult at first, but Mario saved every penny and opened up Caju Restaurant at 922 Queen St. W. Caju serves Brazilian food representing the country's different regions. Brazil has a cultural history that is part European,
African, Asian and native, so eating at Caju is like escaping on a magic carpet to a different world.
Avrum Rosensweig, my friend and colleague, has always had adventure on his mind. He had a dish called Moqueca, which is a traditional Bahia stew. Imagine if you can, a dish made with fresh tomatoes, coconut milk, sweet peppers and onions. Add to this the taste of excellent Malagueta peppers and ginger. Of course, you have your choice with this godly dish from the sea of either shrimp or fish of the day. No one ever leaves after eating this dish without joy in their heart.
Radek Maj, a friend, tried the Feijoada. It seemed to be a taste of excitement and adventure on a plate: Pork tenderloin, beef and chorico, cooked slowly in a black bean sauce. Each bite echoes the love of a diverse culture.
As I have always said, chicken never stops being exciting to me. Caju serves a dish called Frango Com Molho De Quiabo. An herb-crusted chicken breast with polenta, the Frango is finished with a touch of ginger and served with a curry and okra sauce.
Travelling the world without ever leaving Toronto is so much fun and an adventure well-remembered at Caju.
Mario has a special glow in his eyes. He is a man whose charm and charisma touch you within seconds of meeting. After dinner, he told me about his life. Leaving his country was so difficult, but being financially unable to return for his father's funeral was harder. Sometimes when we say goodbye, it is only until we meet again somewhere else. These words came from Mario's mouth, and ended up inside my heart.
